报告人简介:Speaker Bio:Dr. Brian Barrett received his PhD degree from the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences, University College Cork (UCC), Ireland in February 2011. During the period from April 2011 to July 2015 he has been a teaching fellow at School of Geosciences, University of Edinburgh and a post-doctoral fellow with the School of Geography & Archaeology, University College Cork. In August 2015 he joined the School of Geographical and Earth Sciences, University of Glasgow as a lecturer in Geoinformatics. His researches are mainly focused in the field of spaceborne SAR remote sensing for environmental monitoring and modelling, in particular surface soil moisture retrieval and agricultural/forestry land use monitoring. He has published 14 peer-reviewed journal papers and contributed two book chapters.


报告摘要:The influence of soil moisture in the hydrological, carbon, and energy cycles is gaining increasing attention worldwide. The large spatial and temporal heterogeneity of surface soil moisture however makes it a difficult parameter to measure on a routine basis over large areas. The presence of vegetation can be a further limiting factor in its retrieval. This talk will give an overview of my research using spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), focusing on the retrieval of surface soil moisture and different vegetation types in Ireland and other European countries. I will cover the limitations and future possibilities of this type of research based on the insights obtained during recent studies. Towards the end, I will also introduce some of the current research areas of the broader Earth Systems Research Group at the University of Glasgow.
