Abstract:

  Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) systems are very precise distance measurement tools. TerraSAR-X/TanDEM-X can be considered the most precise remote sensing  system in space, allowing for absolute positioning precision in the centimeter range and for relative surface motion estimations in millimeter precision. This high precision can be used for various applications, like the generation of DEMs, the estimation of tectonic shifts or urban subsidence, as well as automated generation of ground control points and many more.  We will take a look into the mechanisms that allow this high precision and into different applications. However, in practice, there are various additional challenges to overcome, which will be demonstrated with examples from SAR geodesy and archaeological fieldwork.
