Speaker: Prof. Xiaotong Zhang
China is trying to build high-speed railways around the world, to reduce travel time and increasing connectivity. However, China’s railway diplomacy has not always been successful. One of the challenges is the so-called "revenge of geography", due to the complicated geopolitical competition among great powers, feud among local communities across the Eurasian continent, clashes of civilizations and religions. China’s connectivity efforts, despite of intensions, are changing geographical landscape, sometimes leading to unintended consequences. China needs to be more delicate and visionary in her diplomacy to cope these consequences. The speaker will reflect upon the efforts made by Chinese government and its diplomatic vision for future.
