Mapping and 3D Modelling of Indoor Environments: Challenges and Opportunities

Up-to-date spatial models of indoor environments are the basis for a growing number of
applications, including navigation, emergency response, virtual assistants, and a range of
location-based services. In recent years, many efforts have been made to develop methods
for efficient mapping of indoor environments and generating semantically rich 3D building
information models. In this talk, I provide an overview of the recent developments in indoor
mapping and modelling, and identify challenges and opportunities for the spatial
information research community.
Kourosh Khoshelham is a senior lecturer at the Department of Infrastructure Engineering of
the University of Melbourne. He has worked as an assistant professor at the University of
Twente, Delft University of Technology, and University of Tehran. He is the co-chair of the
ISPRS WG IV/5 on indoor/outdoor seamless modelling, LBS and mobility, co-chair of Indoor
3D 2017 in Wuhan, and co-chair of Research@Locate 2018, which will be held in Sydney.
Kourosh also serves as the secretary of Australian Spatial Information Education and
Research Association (ASIERA). His research interests include indoor mapping, modelling
and localization, mobile mapping, and information extraction from images and point clouds.
