On October 23, 2019, the Symposium on the Development and Utilization of Spatial Humanities and Social Science Data was held in Wuhan University. Academician Gong Jianya, Dean of the School of Remote Sensing and Information Engineering, Senior Professor of Humanities and Social Sciences, Ma Feicheng, Director of the Big Data Institute of Wuhan University, and Prof. Bao Shuming, Director of the China Data Research Institute attended. The meeting was convened by Professor Xia Yikun, Vice President of the Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences  and chaired by Prof. Huang Minxue from the School of Economics and Management.

This Symposium was jointly organized by the Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences, and the Geocomputation Center for Social Sciences, aiming at interdisciplinary research and data development and utilization in the field of spatial science, Humanities and social sciences. Xia Yikun, vice president of the Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences, Wang Song, deputy director of the Research Institute of science and technology development participated as well. Researchers from the Geocomputation Center for Social Sciences, the Big Data Institute, the Research Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences, the school of politics and public management, the school of society, the school of economics and management, the research center of information resources, the school of information management, the Central Development Research Institute, the School of Computer Science, the State Key Laboratory of Information Engineering in Surveying, Mapping and Remote Sensing, the School of Remote Sensing and Information Engineering and the school of urban design attended the seminar.

Prof. Ma Feicheng first delivered a welcome speech, combining the development of social humanities and the needs of the new situation, putting forward the urgency and necessity of the combination of the development of social humanities and geospatial disciplines, and introducing the background, and vision of the Big Data Institute of Wuhan University. Academician Gong Jianya introduced the current situation of the development of social science and spatial science in China and abroad based on the research characteristics and data characteristics of spatial science and social science. He pointed out that the application scenarios of GIS and spatial science in natural science and social science will be more and more extensive and in-depth, and the interdisciplinary and integration of disciplines will certainly promote the rapid development of their respective disciplines.

Prof. Zhu Xinyan, executive director of the GCSS center, briefly introduced the development of the center since its establishment in January 2018 from the perspectives of platform construction, training and discussion, project progress, academic activities and cooperation and exchange. Professor Bao Shuming, Co-director of the GCSS center, gave a brief introduction to the "spatial data laboratory", a cooperative achievement of Wuhan University and Harvard University. Professor Qin Kun, vice president of the School of Remote Sensing and Information Engineering, combined with the application of "spatial data laboratory" platform in teaching practice. At the seminar, the specific case report and demonstration based on workflow data analysis, including "spatial analysis of air pollution based on social media big data", "spatial analysis of China's higher education development", "road accident analysis and prediction based on traffic big data" and other typical cases.

At the seminar, experts and scholars participated in the discussion on specific issues in interdisciplinary research in combination with their own research background. Combined with questions on optimizing the development and utilization of spatial data, as well as the research and application needs of spatial data in the field of humanities and social sciences, substantial suggestions and valuable ideas for further in-depth cooperation have been discussed.
