The State Key Laboratory of Information Engineering in Surveying, Mapping and Remote Sensing (LIESMARS) at Wuhan University, organized an orientation workshop on 17th
September 2018, at 10:30 am for the new international students that joined the department for their masters and Ph.D. programmes. The event was held at the 4th
Floor of Leisure Hall in LIESMARS. The objective of the workshop was to provide new students an overview of the courses, facilities, and research opportunities being offered at LIESMARS. This included a formal introduction with faculty, administrative staff, senior students, and representatives of students led societies.

Notable participants included Prof. Wu Huayi, the Vice Director of LIESMARS, faculty members, administrative staff, Mr. Hashir-Representative of New and Old Students, all new international students and members of English Geoscience Cafe (EGSC).
The orientation workshop was chaired by Ms. Guan Lin.
In his remarks, Prof. Wu Huayi, welcomed the new students and congratulated them on joining the University. He also shared an overview of LIESMARS mission, its history and described the innovative research that the institution is leading. He further informed students that LIESMARS offers a high quality educational experience and research opportunities, which makes its prominent institution in China and a global scale. He has also gave a general overview of the courses taught as part of undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate degree programmes.
He also discussed the global reputation of Wuhan University, its international ranking, evidence of the demonstrated academic status of Wuhan University. He hoped that through this platform young people can create new knowledge, skills and also build cultural connectivity to promote cross-cultural learning and knowledge exchange, make new friends different social and cultural backgrounds, raise academic level, and leave with a profound an academic, intellectual, and cultural experience.

The next session featured a talk by Mr. Hashir, who is the representative of new and old students, and also a member of the Geoscience Café. He shared his experience of studying at LIESMARS and termed it as a wonderful learning opportunity. He also added that after becoming a part of LIESMARS, every student get number of learning opportunities not only in the class room but also from the exposure and research initiatives offered at the institution. He also mentioned that when he came to join the school initially he thought it will be difficult to integrate but now he feels like that he has become a part of the School. He also invited all the students to join the English geoscience café, which will be an opportunity for them to improvise and brush up their talents to stand tall in this challenging world. He said these skills, build strength, spirit, and disciplined approach to learning and life.

This was followed by a presentation made by Ms. Guan Lin, detailing the programs, curriculum, scholarships, degree application process, extra-curricular activities, etc. offered at LIESMARS. Her presentation also included an introduction to the teaching and administrative staff including herself, and their roles and responsibilities. Her session also included information on the university’s rules and regulations and compulsory requirements for the course evaluation system including submission of a quantitative report and other related evaluations.
Later on, all the faculty members who were a part of the panel introduced themselves They welcomed new students to join in LIESMARS and wished them enjoyed study and life in Wuhan and gained great success in Wuhan University. The presentation also included a survey of the different kind of activities that are organized by the LIESMARS team, English geoscience café is one of them.

Mr. Bai Fan also welcomed the students from all around the world who will be attending their course in LIESMARS. He introduced English Corner in LIESMARS and welcomed students to join in them. English Corner is at 7:00 in each Wednesday’s night. The topics cover research interests, culture, films and so on.
Mr. Liu Shanhong shared a brief instruction of Geoscience café. English Geoscience Café provides a great opportunity to the students to follow their passion. English Geoscience Café led several events including site-seeing excursions for the freshmen at the University of Wuhan. These include the visit to the wonderful glass bridges and the marvelous hill, Mulan Tianchi. These events and sites are a great source of fun, excitement, and learning through interaction and immense pleasure allowing interaction between new and old students, learning the great stories associated with these places, creating exciting and happy moments to cherish as wonderful memories. His speech also added that regarding academic work, LIESMARS English geoscience cafe also arranges different high-quality academic sessions that help students in various projects related to the research as well as in academic work. Furthermore, the members of English geoscience café took time to question students to know about their ideas and participation in (EGSC), the incoming students were quite positive.
The event concluded with a thank-you note, and followed by group photograph taken in front of LIESMARS.
