The first "Wuhan Remote Sensing Week" was held at Wuhan University from October 13th to 18th, 2018. The program included Remote Sensing Science Interactive Exhibition, Remote Sensing Alumni Day, Zhizhuo High-end Academic Forum, Wang Zhizhuo Education Development Fund Committee Meeting, Remote Sensing Development Advisory Committee Meeting, Special recruitment exhibition of Surveying & Mapping Remote Sensing Industry, Geographical National Condition Monitoring Technology and Application seminars and International Conference on Advanced Remote Sensing.
On October 13th, the program’s activities officially began with the opening ceremony of 2018 Wuhan University Remote Sensing Alumni Day and the Zhizhuo High-end Academic Forum. From all over the country, experts, colleagues and alumni were gathered in LuoJia Mountain to discuss on developing an improvised discipline plan and on technical cooperation for China’s development in the field of Remote Sensing.
Academicians Li Deren, Chen Junyong, Ning Jinsheng, Liu Jingnan, Zhang Zuxun, Yang Yuanxi, Gong Jianya, Vice President Zhou Yezhong, Yang Kai (former Deputy Director of the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping), and Li Zhigang (former Chief Engineer of the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping Geographic Information) and other people attended the opening ceremony.
The program started with a welcome speech delivered by Zhou Yezhong. He introduced the talent cultivation concept and notable contributions from Wuhan University’s alumni. Also, he affirmed the performance and achievements of the Remote Sensing discipline over years. Gong Jianya discussed the development of Remote Sensing in terms of discipline system, teaching staff, talent cultivation, platform construction and scientific researches.
To honor the great contributors to this field, five alumni were honored as the fifth "Outstanding Alumni of Remote Sensing", including Yang Kai, Li Zhigang, Li Zaiwen (former Deputy Director of Department of Land and Resources of Guizhou Province), Shan Jie (Professor of Purdue University), and Zhang Hongli (Chairman of Aerospace Finest Information on Technology). Also, Commemorative certificates were issued to the donation representatives of the Wang Zhizhuo Education Development Fund on the session.
As an outstanding representative, Yang Kai shared some good memories of studying at Wuhan University and thanked the school for being a beacon for students of this field. In the spirit of utmost gratitude, he promised to do his best to give back to the school.
In the high-end academic forum, Zhang Zuxun made a special report on “Yesterday and today of DAMS”, systematically reviewed the 40-year development history of the "Fully Digital Automated Mapping System" proposed by Wang Zhizhuo. Wang Zhizhou is the pioneer of modern Chinese Surveying & Mapping as well as the founder of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing in China. Li Deren’s academic report on "Innovative development of Geospatial Informatics" shed light on the innovation and development opportunities in Geospatial Informatics in which China would play a prodigious role.
Apart from the scientific dialogue, this platform reunited hundreds of alumni from the Aerial Photogrammetry Department from the classes of 1977 and onwards. Gong Jianya, and Vice President Li Jiancheng attended the seminar of teachers and students. The participating teachers and returning alumni had a glimpse of their past days of study, reminisced about the friendships they had with each other.
Undoubtedly, the first “Wuhan Remote Sensing Week” fully achieved its purpose of promoting scientific research, research cooperation and knowledge sharing. Moreover, this program served as a great reunion which filled everyone with nostalgia, enabled them to relive those friendly memories.
