From June 9 to 12, 2018, the first seminar on "geocomputation for social sciences - GeoDa development and application" and the GeoDa software release of Chinese version were held at the Wuhan University. More than 60 young scholars and graduate students from home and abroad participated in the seminar.
The seminar was hosted by Wuhan University, the University of Chicago and University of Michigan, the State Key Laboratory of information engineering in surveying, mapping and remote sensing (LIESMARS), School of Remote Sensing and Information Engineering, and the collaborative innovation center of geospatial technology, Wuhan University.
This seminar introduces the theory, method, application and latest progress of social geography computing, including two parts: "theory and method of social geography computing" and "GeoDa programming and secondary development ". The first part of the symposium covers social geography computing, space-time data mining and analysis, social media data analysis and other related theories, methods and applications. The second part of the technical workshop is based on the GeoDa spatial analysis open platform, which developed by the Center for Spatial Data Science in the University of Chicago, and introduces the Geoda roadmap, progress and secondary development. By taking GWR and GeoDa localization and multilingual version development as an example, introduces the extension development of GeoDa. At the same time, the symposium focuses on the introduction and discussion of the spatial statistics and the economic analysis model method, software technology and application platform for social geography computing, as well as the application research in the field of discipline.
The opening ceremony of the symposium was chaired by academician Gong Jianya of Wuhan University, academician of Luc Anselin of University of Chicago and Professor Bao Shuming from University of Michigan, with a web connection. Academician Li Deren delivered the keynote speech "GeoComputation for social sciences -- practice in Wuhan University ". At the seminar, Professor Zhu Xinyan, Professor Chen Nengcheng, Professor Wang Yandong and Shu Hong from the LIESMARS, Professor Qin Kun, deputy dean of the School of Remote Sensing and Information Engineering, Professor of the Institute of social development of Wuhan University, Professor Luo Jiaojiang and Professor Luo Jun, respectively. At the technical workshop, Professor Li Bin from Central Michigan University, Dr. Li Xun of University of Chicago, Dr. Lu Binbin of Wuhan University, and Dr. Zhang Dongying of Zhengzhou University, taught the process and method of GeoDa programming and secondary development by means of technical training and practice.
The closing ceremony of the seminar was summed up by Professor Qin Kun, deputy dean of the School of Remote Sensing and Information Engineering. Through this seminar, Wuhan University will set up a platform for international cooperation and communication. At the same time, the 9th International Forum of Spatially Integrated Humanities and Social Sciences & the second seminar on geocomputation for social sciences will be held in June 2019. Welcome to the meeting next year.
