Professor Gong Wei (1970- ), doctor, is a Professor and PhD tutor of LIESMARS and Director of the International Research Center of Satellite, Remote Sensing and Atmospheric Monitoring, Wuhan University. He is also Chairman of the IEEE Section MD; vice president of ISPRS International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing Working Group; member of Chinese Society of Astronautics Optoelectronic Technology Committee; member of Chinese Society of Astronautics Space Remote Sensing Professional Committee; member of the International Society for Optical Engineering; reviewer of dozen internationally renowned journals. Professor Gong has been engaged in the research of the technology and application of laser and optical remote sensing for many years. He conducted joint research in the United States between 2000 and 2004, the research work of which was covered by the American media, and the project results was rewarded by NASA.

Since returning to China, Professor Gong has presided over several Key, General and Material Instruments Subjects of the National Foundation, and 973, 863 Programs. More than 120 scientific papers were accepted and published, including 30 SCI papers with him being the first/ corresponding author, and more than 50 papers were searched by EI. 10 patents of him have been publicly opened and authorized and 2 books have been co-published. Professor Gong was honored as "New Century Excellent Talents" by the Ministry of Education, "High-level Talent Project" (first level) in Hubei Province, "Creative and Entrepreneurial Talent in Science and Technology" of Hubei Province, and Distinguished Professor of Wuhan University as one of the "Luojiashan Scholars". He was the chief leader for Ministry of Education Innovation Team and ranking first and second in Technology Invention Award of Hubei Province and Science and Technology Progress Award of Hubei Province as the first complete person.

His researches focus on the technology and application of optical and laser remote sensing, including new laser remote sensing technologies towards atmosphere and land, optical and laser remote sensing data processing and the quantitive applications of optical and laser spatial information. Professor Gong is currently working with a number of celebrated scholars from universities and research institutes in the United States, with close cooperation and exchanges in scientific research. At the same time, he teaches several courses for graduate students. In the aspect of cultivating students, Professor Gong focuses on the use of advanced ideas and scientific methods that have been summarized and proven in practical work, with particular attention in cooperation and communication with international counterparts.
