IGSS2021 Opening Ceremony Held

The International GeoInformatics Summer School (Online) (IGSS 2021) officially opened at 8:00AM (Beijing time) on August 23, 2021. More than 120 participants from 35 countries and regions gathered in the “cloud” to witness the opening of IGSS 2021. Qizhu Tang, vice president of Wuhan University, and Deren Li, academician of both the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of engineering, delivered welcome speeches, which was presided over by Huayi Wu, deputy director of State Key Laboratory of Information Engineering in Surveying, Mapping and Remote Sensing.

In the speech, President Qizhu Tang said currently the global community is facing profound challenges, such as public health crises, climate change, epidemic prevention and control, etc. As a site for basic research, talent cultivation, and technological innovation, universities play a key role in tackling key problems in scientific and technological research and development as well as those in economics and social services.

Wuhan University has a long history with a solid foundation across many disciplines. In recent years, the university has demonstrated its competitiveness and competence on the international stage resulting in a rising academic, scientific, and technological status. We strive to cultivate high-level talents with international vision and practical abilities, hence we welcome all outstanding young people who want to meet this era full of opportunities and challenges and seek to better serve their countries and societies, and in this way, build a “community of common destiny”.

Prof. Deren Li introduced that LIESMARS is the famous institution in the world for geospatial information science and technology. There are good teachers here. They work on photogrammetry, remote sensing, GIS, GNSS, and also the integration of GNSS, RS and GIS. Beside the physical space, we live in the other space named cyberspace. With 5G/6G, clouding communication technology and artificial intelligence, we can make the physical space project into the cyberspace through Digital Twins techniques. Then in the cyberspace, we’ll use more techniques to help people manage the real space. Prof. Li sincerely welcomed all the students come Wuhan University for learning, to see our best campus in near future.

In the opening ceremony, Prof. Huayi Wu introduced the history and development of IGSS. He pointed out that the past several decades witnessed the great achievements on the development of GeoInformatics, not only in academia, but also the technologies in the industry. While there are more and more innovative applications supported by geospatial technology in almost all fields of government sectors, companies, and personal life. Prof. Wu called on the young talents to join LIESMARS and this field for a sustainable and green planet.

Organized by State Key Laboratory of Information Engineering in Surveying, Mapping and Remote sensing ( LIESMARS) at Wuhan University, IGSS is committed to conveying the most advanced GeoInformatics knowledge to all students. This year, IGSS invited professors from China, USA and Italy to provide three courses, covering multi-temporal SAR Interferometry for Disaster Mitigation, machine learning and Social Sensing, Geospatial Big Data Computing, and Disaster Management. Scientific and technological advances in these areas  promote the healthy development of society and mankind. IGSS 2021 also received great support from Hi-Target Satellite Navigation Technology Co., Ltd., Joint International Research Laboratory of GeoInformatics (JIRLG) , and UN-GGIM Acedamic Network.
